Student’s Good Work> Anthology of English essays - Do Small Things But with Big Meaning

Nowadays, I think it is hard to find good people who do good deeds because of the mask that people put on when they grow up. Everyone has to hide their desire so that they can succeed in work. Neighbours used to chat together but now we even don't know who is living next to us. However, something small happened which changed my mind.

One day, I was walking home alone, carrying my heavy school bag. Since it was 7 p.m., the street started to be a bit crowded, people were in a hurry, but I saw a small shadow standing under the lights. He was crying, it seemed like he had lost his mum. I looked around, and people were just passing by, no one even noticed that boy. 'Ring, ring,’ my phone rang. It was too late, my mum started to keep calling me until I was back home. I told the kids to stay next to the lamp before I came back. I rushed back home and explained to my mum. I ran as fast as I could to the lamp, but the boy was nowhere to be found. I was scared that the kid was taken away and sold for slavery. Suddenly a childish voice yelled behind me. I turned around and saw the boy holding hands with a middle-aged woman and a man who was dressed in a suit standing next to them. It turned out that when I was gone, the man noticed the boy and helped him find his mum. The time was 9 p.m., and I was surprised that the man wasn't like the others.

After that day, I realized that Hong Kong people are not that cold-blooded. And I think “good people good deeds” does not mean jumping into the water to save someone from drowning or stopping a bank robbery. To me, making someone happy could also be counted as “good people good deeds". Just be positive and bring hope to others.
